Chapter 2 – Relating Kotodama and Shinto
The Practice of Individually Becoming the Creator
Teaching people how to perform the rituals of Hakke Shinto is a basic part of spreading the concept, but also a variety of other methods that unite this knowledge with modern science is a broad area that is being explored. For many, the practice of ancient rituals by modern people seem of little practical value, however the rites of Hakke Shinto are actually applicable to helping people to better understand some of the discoveries of modern science. Nanasawa elaborates:
Understanding the power of the creation of the universe is perhaps similar to the Hakke Shinto concept of becoming the creator of the universe through, “grasping and eating Gods.” When humans become the Gods in this way, they are one with the creative energy of the universe.
In Hakke Shinto, Kotodama (the spirit in words) is the basis of the creation of the universe. In order to make Kotodama function correctly, the practice of Misogi Harai (rite of clearing and purification) is performed. In response to the sounds of the calling of the Gods in resonance with the fifty sounds, the Great God Amaterasu (Illuminate of Heaven) appears and greets the God of Ameno Minakanushi (Master of Heaven), who is the origin of the fifty sounds and then the Master of Heaven turns everything back into the original world of nothingness.
When this is done, the clearing of Hifumi no Harai (Clearing of One, Two and Three) is dedicated with gratitude for being able to restart a new creation of the universe. By declaring the Hifumi no Harai with gratitude in which the words of numbers and sounds begin to resonate with the words of God that link to the origin of creation, this leads to a path of enlightenment.
The Practice of Individually Becoming the Creator
At the heart of the decision to re-introduce the secretive rites of Hakke Shinto to the modern world is Musubi. Nanasawa says:
“My guiding thought throughout this study is one of equality. Every being is precious, with no difference of being above or below others. I noticed that many great thinkers and philosophers of the world have appeared throughout history, but none of them were able to apply a great sense of equality among people. In order to achieve an equal sense of mind, then there is no better way than for everyone to grab God and feel God in their body. I believe that my task is to think of a variety of methods to manifest a sense of equality and to spread this concept.”
“In the beginning stage of the rite of Tokusa no Kandakara (The Ten Stages of God’s Treasures) the practitioner is united with the God of ancestors, which enables them to grasp the traditional ancestral worship with their knowledge of DNA and modern science. Later to greet the god Kunitsu (earth) the practitioner is better able to understand their place within the natural environment, to the point that they feel the environment in their own body. When it is perceived that the destruction of nature is the destruction of self, then there can be hope for global solutions to the environmental problems that are happening throughout the world. As one continues the practice, after uniting with Amatsu, the theme of controlling the outer world by the Kotodama (spirit of words) could lend the wisdom to allow people to confront the divisive philosophical issues that still keep people apart in terms of understanding existentialism, theory of contradicition, theory of practice, and so on. Theoretically, if enough people are to maintain this practice, then an understanding of the mysteries of quantum science, and eventually a religious sense of understanding of the power of creation will emerge.”
Understanding the power of the creation of the universe is perhaps similar to the Hakke Shinto concept of becoming the creator of the universe through, “grasping and eating Gods.” When humans become the Gods in this way, they are one with the creative energy of the universe.
“… After all, there will be no other way for this understanding to emerge than if each of us becomes God. From the beginning of our lives, the human being is individually an existence to become a temporary home for the creator. This is why you must also grasp God by yourself. Unless you do you will end up believing in God, not understanding God. You must not worship God, or try to hold on to God, but instead, make a resolution to become one of God’s functions. For this purpose, it is important to ask God to support you. In Hakke Shinto, it is understood that the recitation of the Norito is not a prayer, but rather it is performed in order to create a space for unified energy to become one with the practitioner by calling forth four types of clearing energies.”
“… By practicing the Hakke Shinto observances, you will become one with the energy of the creation of the universe. This would make you perceive the world in a way that resembles the way of the universe was described in the Kojiki, without ever having studied the book. It is my hypothesis that the Kojiki is actually a book about the human understanding of time and space that was laid down as a story of personified Gods. This may be how the Kojiki was began and transmitted down through these stories from long ago.”
