Explaining the Clearing Powers of Each of the Stages of the Rites of the Nine Strata
The Rites of the Nine Strata is an elaboration on the concept of the five strata that is then applied to Shinto observance. This theme of elaboration based on the five strata is a fundamental concept that is reflected in the practice of many Hakke Shinto rites. For example, in the Hifumi no Harai (Clearing of one, two, and three) a clearing ritual of counting the numbers one to ten is a basic meditation on the nine strata; hi (1),fu (2), mi (3), yo (4), i (5), mu (6), na (7), ya (8), ko (9), to (10). The nine numbers make one unit, with the 2 digit number, ‘to’ (10), beginning the next unit. From there, the names of the Shinto kami (gods) can then be understood and placed within the Nine Strata (see the chart on pp. 43-44).
Nanasawa comments that:
By understanding the Hakke Shinto belief in the infinite application of the concept of the five strata and the perception of the nine strata through Hakke Shinto ritual and teaching, Nanasawa has developed theories to unify human understanding of phase resonance as understood since ancient times.

Based on his understanding of the energetic spectrum of phase resonance theory of the universe, Nanasawa has applied the concept of the nine phases. The logic in a physical sense is that the nine phases are put to the same order as our understanding of 3D reality. Ascending the chart, at the center of the earth (center of gravity’s pull) there is molten core (fire), surrounded by a layer of cooling ores, mostly iron (metal). Above that layer the crust of the earth is soil, some parts are covered by sea and others by trees. Above that layer the lower atmosphere (wind), the upper atmosphere (sky) and then outer space (heaven). From this ordering of the matrix of reality, Nanasawa considers that people at the surface of the earth would be consciously observing reality at the phase corresponding to above water and below trees.
In the next chart, the nine phase resonance spectrum is correlated to the Shinto God names, Kotodama Linguistic theory that were discussed in chapter 1, and brainwave patterns based on modern scientific research.

By applying the Hakke Shinto concepts of phase energy along with an integrated idea of the creation stories (and energetics) of the Kojiki a synergistic understanding of consciousness emerges. At this point of expanded thought one can begin to see that the patterns of the universe take on similar structure, from the atomic world to the structure of solar systems and galaxies.
This power would be classified scientifically as the five powers of quantum physics. Namely, the four type of creative powers: weak power, strong power, electric and magnetic power, and the power of gravity. Accordingly, the power of the energy of the creation of the universe (AKA zero point energy), which is understood to be at work behind forces of nature would be the nearest equivalent to Musubi. Nanasawa asserts that according to Hakke Shinto, the essence of soul is manifested by the energy of the spirits and is seen as energy being unified. The role of spirit is to unify other things and for that reason, the power of ‘spirit’ remains unknown. This is the stratum of unity at which understanding cannot be told by science, philosophy, or religion. This is where mythical knowledge, such as the knowledge of the power of Musubi can be the only guide.
