Understanding ‘Musubi’ - The Spirit of Unification
In the final three stages of the Tokusa no Kandakara (The Ten Stages of God’s Treasures) the practice leads to an understanding of unification. Since the last two stages, niishu (second stage) and isshu (first stage) are services that only the emperor conducts, then the last of the hidden teachings of Hakke Shinto that can be learned at this time is sanshu (third stage). In all of the final three stages, the practice is to greet all of the God of Ichinomiya (The First Shrine). Specifically however, this means that the Emperor (practitioner) is to have greeted all of the Gods in consecutive order through the training until, at last, he had greeted the God Ameno Minakanushi no Kami (Master of Heaven / ウ – ‘oo’/ #1 on sound mandala ). From this stage, the Emperor observes services to greet all of the Gods in ‘Ichinomiya.’
Nanasawa interprets this artifact that the services of ‘Ichinomiya’ as having to do with the cross-over to the work of political matters:
What is noteworthy is that the names of the last three stages Chinrei (third), Furube (second), and Futomani (first) mirror the world view of the creation mythology of the Kojiki (An Account of Ancient Matters). The meanings of the three names correspond consecutively to the phases of the creation of the universe. Nanasawa continues:
The Emperors secret rites in the observance of Tokusa no Kandakara were intended to allow him to become one with the same energy that is behind the creation of the universe. The key factor to understand this energetic is Musubi (force of unification). As a continuation of the concept of the five strata that was introduced in chapter 1, Musubi energetically falls into the same strata as ethical practice :
Type | through | subjective | understanding |
Existential Wisdom | The 5 Gods | God | Will |
Practical Wisdom | The 5 Spirits | Ethics | Unity |
Intuitive Wisdom | The 5 Souls | Truth | Mind |
Experiential Wisdom | The 5 Emotions | Psychology | Emotion |
Perceptive Wisdom | The 5 Senses | Physiology | Life |
As the classification of wisdom into the five layers implies, wisdom cannot actually be known independently, but rather is a multi-faceted concept of feelings, experiences, and existential beliefs that is what allows for people to unite with each other. It is through this unification that wisdom can become a creative energy in the universe. Nanasawa explains:
